The complete Sky Mobile story
Sky Mobile is one of the UK's newer major MVNOs β but its history includes a significant ownership change and controversial feature reductions that every potential customer should understand before signing up.
February 2017
Sky Mobile launches as Sky plc's first entry into the UK mobile market. Launch features: Piggybank data rollover and Data-free Sky TV streaming (Sky Go content didn't count against data). MVNO on O2's network infrastructure.
2018
Sky Mobile reaches 1 million subscribers. Mix plans introduced β allowing monthly data allowance changes with no penalty. No other major UK network offers this flexibility. Piggybank praised widely in consumer reviews.
2019
Comcast Corporation acquires Sky plc (including Sky UK, Sky Mobile, Sky News, Sky Sports) for Β£30.6 billion β one of the largest media acquisitions in history. Sky Mobile continues operating as a Sky UK subsidiary.
2020
Sky Mobile reaches 2 million subscribers. Swap12 upgrade programme launches formally β upgrade handset after 12 months on 24-month contract. 5G access begins rolling out via O2's infrastructure.
2021
Piggybank storage extended to 3 years maximum β customers could save up to 36 months of unused data. Combined billing with Sky TV and Sky Broadband launches with meaningful multi-product discounts.
2022
Sky Mobile passes 3 million subscribers. Roaming Passport Plus launches as a paid add-on for extended worldwide roaming. Consistent mid-table Ofcom satisfaction ratings.
2023
Sky Mobile renews MVNO agreement with Virgin Media O2. eSIM activation launches via Sky Mobile app β compatible with recent iPhone and Samsung Galaxy devices.
April 2024 β οΈ
Piggybank reduced from 3 years to 12 months maximum storage. This is a significant reduction β customers who chose Sky Mobile specifically for long-term data banking now receive a substantially less valuable feature. Existing stored data under the 3-year arrangement was not immediately lost, but the cap going forward became 12 months.
2024 β οΈ
Data-free Sky TV streaming removed for new customers. Previously, watching Sky Go and Sky content did not count against your monthly data allowance β a compelling differentiator for Sky TV subscribers. Removed for new sign-ups, reducing Sky Mobile's unique value proposition for Sky TV households.
2025β26
Sky Mobile maintains Piggybank (12-month cap) and Mix monthly flexibility as primary differentiators. Roaming terms adjusted β EU roaming now varies by plan rather than being universally included. Annual rise structure: RPI-linked with 30-day notice and penalty-free exit right.
Critical for buyers: Any Sky Mobile review, comparison or guide written before April 2024 will describe Piggybank as offering 3-year storage and may mention Data-free Sky TV β both of which no longer apply for new customers. Always verify current terms at sky.com/shop/mobile.
