The complete EE story

EE's story is actually two stories β€” Orange UK and T-Mobile UK β€” that merged in 2010 to create the UK's most covered mobile network. Here is the full timeline from 1994 to 2026:

1993–94
Orange UK launches in April 1994 as the UK's fourth mobile network β€” bringing flat-rate pricing and vibrant brand identity to a market dominated by more corporate operators. T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) also launches UK operations through its One2One brand in 1993.
2000
France Telecom acquires Orange plc for Β£28.7 billion. T-Mobile UK rebrands from One2One to T-Mobile. Both networks compete vigorously through the 2G and early 3G era.
2010
Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile parent) and France Telecom (Orange parent) agree to merge their UK operations β€” creating Everything Everywhere Ltd. The UK's largest-ever domestic mobile merger at the time, forming a combined company with the most spectrum of any UK operator.
October 2012
Everything Everywhere launches its new EE brand and simultaneously launches the UK's first commercial 4G LTE network. Initial coverage: London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester. A full 12 months ahead of O2, Three and Vodafone on 4G. Significant first-mover advantage in speed positioning.
2013–14
EE expands 4G to cover over 100 cities and towns. First independent speed test crowns EE as the UK's fastest mobile network β€” a title it has retained for every subsequent year of testing.
January 2015
BT Group announces acquisition of EE for Β£12.5 billion β€” the largest acquisition in BT's history and the UK's biggest-ever telecoms deal. Completion in January 2016.
2016
BT completes EE acquisition. EE becomes part of BT Group alongside BT Consumer, BT Business, BT Wholesale and Plusnet. Orange and T-Mobile brands retired β€” all customers migrated to EE.
May 2019
EE launches the UK's first commercial 5G network β€” initially covering parts of London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester. Again first to 5G among UK networks, reinforcing EE's premium positioning.
2020–23
EE expands 5G to 150+ towns and cities. Consistently rated #1 for speed and coverage in independent tests (Opensignal, Ookla, RootMetrics). Inclusive Extras programme launches β€” Netflix, Apple Music, Xbox Game Pass included on higher tiers.
September 2024
EE launches 5G+ Standalone (SA) architecture β€” reaching approximately 44 million people. SA delivers lower latency, better building penetration and network slicing capability. A significant technical milestone.
2026
EE reaches 87%+ UK 5G population coverage across 500+ towns β€” widest of any UK mobile network. Annual rise: Β£2.50/month SIM, Β£4/month handset from March 2026. Opensignal January 2026: #1 combined average download at 53.2Mbps β€” 10+ consecutive years as independently rated fastest UK network.
